What do I need to knows about bike riding? What kind of bike to get?

Question by IceBreaker27: What do I need to knows about bike riding? What kind of bike to get?
I’d like to start riding a bike for fitness. How do I go about purchasing a bike? I’d like to stay under $ 200 for now, and used is fine. I’m 5’3 and will be riding on pavement. I’ve been searching craigslist for bikes, but I have no clue about what size wheels I need, or what speed is ideal.

Thanks!

Hum…

For most bikes, wheel size is less of an issue than what type of bicycle riding you want to do.

If you want to ride paved roads, you’ll want a road bike or possibly a hybrid. Road and hybrids bikes usually come with 700c wheels. The primary difference is that road bikes are built purely for speed. They are light and have dropped handlebars for better aerodynamics. A hybrid will usually have flat handlebars that allow you to sit more upright. Road and hybrid bikes will usually have either 2 or 3 chain rings in front and from 7 to 10 cogs in back. If you are doing a lot of riding in hilly areas, I’d recommend you get a bike with 3 chain rings in front. Higher end bikes will tend to have more cogs in back.

For off-road usage, you’ll want a mountain bike. Most mountain bikes have 26″ wheels. Nearly all mountain bikes have 3 chain rings in front and 7-9 cogs in back.

There is no such thing as standard sizes in the biking industry. At 5-3″ you’ll probably need a “small.” At the very least, make sure you can comfortably stand over the bike with an inch or two of room to spare. Fit of a bike can be customized by replacing the handlebar stem and adjusting seat height and position. Your local bike shop will be happy to help you get the bike dialled in.

When contacting people on Craigslist, I’d recommend asking how tall the rider of the bike is. If they are approximately your size, you should at least be in the right ball park.

Hope this helps.

7 Amazing Benefits Of Owning A Recumbent Exercise Bike

There are so many amazing benefits to owning a recumbent exercise bike; it’s almost hard to list. If you’re undecided on what kind of exercise bike you want to get, just read a few of these points below!

Say Goodbye to Stiff Back!

Most bikes require that you lean forward as you bike. Although this can be fine at first, it quickly turns into a painful back experience.

If you’re working out regularly, this could even turn into a long term damaging effect. All in all, regular bikes aren’t great for your back.

Even Weight Distribution

Most bikes have almost all the weight centered on one areal: The Pelvis. This means that after 30 minutes of biking, your groin area will usually really, really hurt.

In addition to being uncomfortable, scientists have shown that it could actually cause damage to the perineum as well. With a recumbent bike, that won’t happen.

Designed Solely for Exercise

Regular bikes were designed for travel, not for exercise. Even the stationary bike, which was modeled after the normal bike, was just based on a design for traveling over distances.
The recumbent bike however was designed to help you work out without damaging other areas of the body. And it’s achieved that end very well.

You Can’t Cheat!

One common way people “cheat” when they’re riding a bike or an exercise bike is by standing up and peddling.

With a recumbent bicycle, you can’t do that – Standing up just doesn’t make physical sense. You’ll workout harder without having to cheat – You won’t want to or be able to!

You Can Work out Just as Hard!

A lot of people worry that a recumbent bike, because it has a reclining seat, means that you’ll be more comfortable and workout less hard.

The opposite is true. The bike is designed to take your attention off the pain generated in other areas so you can just focus on building your cardiovascular and leg strength. To that end, the recumbent exercise bike is very effective.

Healthier for Your Hands, Arms and Nerves

Because most bikes require you to lean forward, that puts a lot of pressure on the hands and the arms. That results in nerves getting compressed and over time getting number. It also causes less blood to flow through the arms.

The recumbent exercise bike resolves this issue by distributing the weight evenly throughout the butt and the back.

Wide Range of Options

With a recumbent exercise bike, you have a wide range of options to choose from.
You can buy one for under 0 if you wanted to. It’ll be mostly bare-bones featured, most likely without electronic measurements.

If you’re willing to spend around the ,000 mark, then you’re in for a treat. You’ll have electronic systems designed to track your vitals and your progress. You’ll have custom workout routines already built in and ready to go.
There’s a recumbent exercise bike for everyone, no matter what your fitness or financial profile looks like. Ready to see what’s right for you?

We all buy exercise bikes with the best of intentions. We want to use them daily to get fit and tone our bodies. One great bike for those who are less fit is a recumbent exercise bike; it comes in a variety of styles to suit ones budget and fitness level.

Why People Still Get The Schwinn Airdyne Exercise Bike

The Schwinn Airdyne is only one type of upright exercise bike and is certainly not as popular as certain elliptical machines or even treadmills. But that does not mean that many stationary bikes are not still purchased and used. The exercise bike is no fad machine and continues to be popular for several reasons. And the Airdyne bike in particular still sells even though the design is little changed since the bike was introduced nearly 40 years ago. I have one of these dual action bikes and have had the same bike for almost 20 years and it still goes strong. Here are a few reasons why an AirDyne bike may work better for you than a recumbent of another upright exercise bike.

It Lasts and Lasts

The bikes are something of a classic and as such you could say that the reputation sells the bike but there is more to it than just reputation. It is a simple matter to find owner testimonials all over that report long-term use of these machines with little trouble. Part of that may be that the bikes are built like a tank of welded and stamped steel and are such a stable platform that almost cannot be hurt. Then again, the bikes have just the barest of electronics and the built-in computer on the newer models, missing on the older ones, really just provides feedback on time, distance, workload level, calories burned, calories per hour, heart rate, and RPM. It is not a programmable workout type computer. That means the electronics can all fail and that has no bearing of the continuing to do what it does. It’s a rock-solid platform and built rugged and simple so it just keeps working and will do so for a long time. But it works well too as you will often hear too.

Workout For Most Muscle Groups

The Airdyne was the original dual action air resistance machine. That means using the bike is a workout for both upper and lower body. That really brings most all the muscles into the picture and that makes for a more balanced exercise that produces results. In fact the good results may partly be because of the real workout for all major muscle groups. See, that is really part of the key to sustainable weight loss… Build muscle and you can increase your basal, or at-rest, metabolism and become a better fat-burner. What’s more, since pedaling and pumping the bike turns a big fan, it’s a simple matter of just going faster to increase load and slowing down to reduce the load of resistance. It’s simple to use and very effective.

Is the Airdyne Too Expensive Though?

These are really quite costly though and so why pick one after all? You get, as with many exercise machines, gym-like workouts with no continuing fees or costs of any sort. The Air dyne though provides good value partly because of the durability as mentioned and partly too because of the somewhat-unique all-over workout from the dual action design. As for the durability value, when you consider that you likely will not need any other exercise equipment, buying one of these could save as compared to buying a whole series of lesser machines. Then too there is the time savings since you can completely quit looking at what fitness machine to get next.

Compare an exercise bike with an elliptical machine or a treadmill. The bike can be used by just about anybody. It works well for people with certain injuries even. Bikes work the big muscle groups well and that makes for a workout with best results and fast results. Both recumbent and upright stationary bikes have pluses and minuses. The Airdyne is somewhat unique partly from the dual action design and partly from it’s history of durability and low maintenance. The Schwinn Airdyne bike works well and keeps on going as a dependable way to get a good workout that works.

Pedal exercise bikes to work out no matter what the time of year or weather. The Schwinn Airdyne exercise bike helps you burn fat with a simple machine.
